Geneva’s Historic Chalet: A Quiet, Trendy Retreat

A historical chalet, located on the border of Geneva, artfully combines high-class architecture with a peaceful sanctuary. The chalet constitutes a delightful retreat in the Conches neighbourhood on Geneva’s outskirts amidst the hustle and bustle of Switzerland’s second-most populous city.

Constructed in the early 20th century, this chalet-style property, situated on 1-hectare (roughly 2.5-acres) of forested land, also includes two ponds. Hubert Chamorel from FGP Swiss & Alps, the agent responsible for the listing, says, “The property provides a serene view of the valley and nature from a convenient location just five minutes away from the city centre. You can do your groceries by foot, and all schools lie in close proximity.”

The Spring Frères’ traditionally designed chalet was constructed in 1910 at the behest of the original proprietor who drew inspiration from the Swiss National Exhibitions, grand events celebrating Swiss heritage, industry, technological advancements, and the arts. The 1896 exhibition in Geneva, for instance, involved constructively imagining a 56-house village representing the Swiss cantons’ traditional abodes.

The residence was officially recognized by the city for its national significance and underwent renovation around ten years ago, with modern expansions gaining additions to include a subterranean garage. Authentic portions of the house such as the kitchen ceiling beams and staircase were retained, taking due care to preserve the building’s historic elements while introducing new and updated features.

The house encompasses four levels, covering more than 7,500 square feet of living space with a great room featuring a fireplace located at its centre. Mont Salève’s picturesque views can be enjoyed through walls of windows. The house sports a stainless steel kitchen with Rorgue appliances and a large central island. The first suite, featuring two walk-in closets and access to a private terrace, along with two bedrooms with private bathrooms, are located upstairs. The topmost floor houses an additional bedroom and bathroom as well as a balcony.

The basement is currently being utilized as a garage for the present owner’s car collection and could be repurposed according to specific requirements. This didactic piece of Swiss culture can be yours for CHF 16.5 million or roughly USD 18.5 million. HWOOD, as the property is named, is suitable as a family residence according to Chamorel.

Potential buyers must be Swiss citizens or permanent residents to acquire this property as their primary residences due to Swiss market protections. However, Chamorel believes that it would suit someone with an artistic inclination coupled with an appreciative mindset towards nature the best.
