Miami Fires Cop Arrested on Cocaine, Extortion Charges

A Miami law enforcement veteran, Frenel Cenat, has been dismissed from his position as a City of Miami police officer, three months following his arrest on charges of extortion and drug theft from individuals suspected of drug trafficking. Cenat’s job was officially terminated in February after being apprehended by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in 2023. The FBI confirmed that they apprehended Cenat during a sting operation, capturing him red-handed as he intercepted undercover agents who he presumed were drug dealers, coercing them to give up thousands of dollars and a supposed amount of cocaine. After joining the police department in 2008, Cenat was assigned to the evidence room in recent years. His arrest on November 16 was based on charges including Hobbs Act extortion, theft of government funds, and attempted possession with intent to distribute cocaine. The authorities discovered Cenat’s illicit activities through a confidential insider. This source revealed that the officer had been exploiting his badge and an unmarked police car to intercept drug trafficking suspects in Broward County, and steal their banned substances and money. An operation was then set up, wherein the informant gave false information to Cenat regarding drug deals taking place nearby, luring Cenat into a trap. Cenat is claimed to have taken a payout from an undercover agent during a fake pull-over on November 3. He reportedly identified himself as “Officer Martez” from the “Miami PD – Dade County Narcotics Unit” and promised to release the agent in exchange for a $50,000 cash stash. On November 16, Cenat made another stop, but this time he was under the belief he was confronting a drug dealer. This incident occurred under a similar pretense, with Cenat now falsely identifying himself as an officer from the “Broward County Sheriff’s Office – Narcotics Unit.” Post Cenat’s arrest, Miami Police Chief Manuel Morales emphasized that Cenat was corrupt, stating that transparency in maintaining community trust is crucial during the investigation. However, no comments regarding Cenat’s firing have been received from the local police union. The Miami Police Department declined to remark on the lengthy termination process of Cenat, instead pointing to a set list of extended internal affairs rules and regulations for departmental disciplinary review. Cenat was arraigned in early February, where an initial not-guilty plea was recorded. His change-of-plea hearing will take place on March 21.
