Pending Charges in Fatal Scooter Crash of Miami University Student

Ed Hudak, the Coral Gables Police Chief, informed the city commission that charges in connection with the fatal scooter accident involving a university student are now being reviewed by the state attorney’s office. Daniel “Danny” Bishop, a university senior, was fatally injured on March 4 when he was hit by a car while driving his scooter to the University of Miami. The incident occurred near South LeJeune Road and Altara Avenue. The driver of the car stayed at the scene after the crash but has not yet been identified by the police. Few details about the accident have been made public, but Hudak mentioned that a case against the driver of the car is under consideration by the Miami-Dade County State Attorney’s office and the accident is still being investigated by the traffic homicide unit. Hudak emphasized during a city commission meeting that Bishop was obeying all traffic regulations at the time of the accident. He also mentioned that there has been an increase in accidents in crosswalks recently in Coral Gables. He did not elaborate on any potential traffic violations related to the accident. Hudak stated that the State Attorney’s office holds the ultimate authority over the decision to press charges. Bishop was a Coral Springs native and was salutatorian of his graduating class at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. After surviving a school shooting in 2018, he became an advocate for gun control reform. While attending the University of Miami, he joined the President’s 100 organization, and he also operated his own math tutoring company. According to The Miami Hurricane, the University of Miami’s student newspaper, Bishop was expected to be a math teacher at Gulliver Preparatory School after receiving his degree. A city employee was injured by a vehicle in another recent accident in Coral Gables, but they did not sustain life-threatening injuries. The police chief revealed that three city fire rescue vehicles were also hit by the driver. He mentioned that they’ve noticed an increment in accidents over the past week.
