At a rally in South Carolina, ex-President Trump raised questions about the location of Nikki Haley’s spouse. He queried, “Where is her husband? He seems to be missing. What has happened to him?”
The husband in question, Maj. Michael Haley, is deployed with the 218th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade in the Horn of Africa. Part of the South Carolina National Guard, Maj. Haley opted for deployment last June. This is his second tour in Africa with the Army.
Haley did not hesitate to respond to the jibes at her husband during her own rally in Lexington, South Carolina. Asserting that Trump was mocking her husband’s military service, she challenged him to voice his criticisms face-to-face on a debate platform.
Nikki Haley and her husband Michael Haley were seen together post a campaign event at Horry-Georgetown Technical College in South Carolina in March 2023.
Haley defended her husband’s military service and pointed out the familial sacrifices that come with it. She also reiterated the need for mental competency tests for politicians over the age of 75. “If you mock the service of a combat veteran, you do not deserve to be the president of the US,” she stated.
In a rare response, Michael Haley countered Trump’s attacks on social media, saying that unlike humans, animals would never allow the most foolish ones to lead.
Haley’s husband’s military service heavily informs her campaign speeches, where she frequently discusses the difficulties he faced after returning from Afghanistan. She expressed her dedication towards the military community during a Republican presidential debate in December, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging their sacrifice.
It’s been noted that former first lady Melania Trump has not made an appearance on her husband’s campaign trail since he announced his third run for presidency in November 2022.
